With the mobile market booming, native apps are often thought of as the only option to serve up website content. While native apps can be excellent options for this, they do have their downfalls as well. First and foremost is the development time/investment to produce an app for a specific platform. Developing a native app is expensive. Even if cost is not an issue it is still a timely process and the app will need to be reviewed and approved before it is allowed up in an app store. Additionally it is a tedious process to implement updates and revisions to the app, and then the user will have to update the app on their own.
When phone specific features are not necessary, a Web App offers the same great mobile experience (Home screen icon, splash screen, full screen browsing) as a native app without all the hassle! No additional development time or investment. No app store review. No tedious update process.
Why are web apps not as well known or advertised? Simple. Apple and Android app stores make money off native apps. They do not profit from web apps so they have no reason to promote or encourage web apps.
When it comes down to it Web Apps are a much more practical way to optimize a users mobile experience and enhance your website.
